Misdirection Blog Tour Schedule
For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or
traditional paper/hard back books?
I actually don’t own an e-reader, and have never read
a book in digital form. I’m a fan of printed matter, however anachronistic that
may be. I enjoy holding a book -- turning the pages, the smell of the ink, the
overall tactile experience. I’ll probably transition to digital without too
much of a ruckus if books ever cease to be printed on paper, but I’ll be one of
the last holdouts to make that switch.
What is your favorite quote?
“The menu is not the meal.” -- Alan Watts. I think if
Watts was still alive he’d say this holds true whether the menu is on paper or
on an e-reader.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Nothing too original, unfortunately. The most obvious
pieces of advice tend to be the most useful. Try to write every day, or at
least five days a week. Set a requirement for a full day’s work that seems
manageable (a thousand words isn’t a bad place to start) and make it a point to
reach that benchmark every time you sit down to write. Even if you don’t think
the material you’re producing on a given day is usable, there may be some germ
of a good idea that emerges simply from hammering words onto the page. You
might often be surprised to revisit material you didn’t think would ever
survive the first round of editing, only to find it’s better than you
remembered. The chance of being pleasantly surprised alone is sufficient reason
to keep writing even when you’re not feeling enthusiastic about that day’s
work.
Which writers inspire you?
Anyone who can make a living by writing the kind of
material they truly enjoy is an inspiration. My own reading tastes lean heavily
toward fiction, but I’m not too choosy about genre. I admire pretty much any
writer capable of creating a compelling narrative with characters whose company
I’m grateful to share while reading.
Do you have a favorite snack/drink while you write?
My day doesn’t really start without coffee, so
whenever I’m writing in the morning I’ll have a mug handy. The book I’m
currently working on takes place in New Orleans, so I’ve been drinking chicory
coffee from Cafe de Monde (a NOLA institution) to help conjure some local
flavor.
Do you write in silence or do you have background
noise?
It varies. Sometimes music can help trigger ideas,
especially if it shares some connection to what is being written (like being
from the same era or location of the story). Other times silence feels like the
best accompaniment.
If you met the characters from MISDIRECTION do you
think you would be friends or foes?
Well, it would depend of which character. There are
definitely some people in MISDIRECTION I would never want to meet in real life.
As for my protagonist, Rusty Diamond, I’m not sure how well we would hit it
off. He’s pretty rough around the edges, not the easiest guy to get along with.
But he almost always does the right thing, even if not always for the right
reasons. Plus he’s a master magician, so he brings a lot of entertainment value
to the table. I think it would be interesting to meet him, but I doubt we would
become close friends. Maintaining a purely literary relationship seems like a
better way to go.
